Ensemble Works

I have always had a strong interest in writing instrumental music for a broad range of ensembles from orchestral works to various chamber groups, duos and works for solo instruments.

Along with this drive to explore orchestration and instrumental colour has been a parallel interest in the potentials of less common instrumental combinations in order to engage with the energetic, emotional and philosophical implications they carry.

Examples include: ‘Nine Discourses on Commodus’ for six basses (commissioned by Vienna based group Bass Instinct).

‘Cavernous Ruins’ for string quartet, marimba and percussion (performed by the New Zealand String Quartet with percussionist Ian Rosenbaum).https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qx180ddnZdc

‘The Sun Came Up at Quarter to Three’ for oboe, viola, marimba and drum set.

Periodically through performance and/or recording I put groups together to bring these works into the world and explore their less frequently travelled sonic terrain.
